The original Building NX was built in 1989 and consisted of aluminum curtain walls and spandrel panels, as well as a glass vestibule with a glazed roof. The interior of the building was known to be cold in the winter and warm in the summer, causing discomfort for the occupants. As part of Humber’s Integrated Energy and Water Master Plan (IEMP), they made the decision to implement an envelope retrofit, conducted by Ennova Facades, that is extremely insulated and airtight, while doing energy efficient upgrades on the HVAC, lighting, and PV system. Humber’s plan achieved the EnerPHit Certification and led by example on how to perform deep energy efficiency retrofits in a Canadian climate.
