Year Completed: 2019
Client: Northwestern University Facilities Management
Construction Manager: Power Construction Company
Architects: Perkins + Will

The Simpson Querrey Biomedical Research Center is at the core of Chicago’s medical district, housing scientists researching cancer, heart disease, neurodegenerative disorders, diabetes, and other salient areas of study. The building is 14-stories and 600,000 sq. ft. featuring a curved glass exterior, and massive cantilevers on three sides of the building, which allows for open collaboration areas free of obstructions or columns. The space has a build-out capacity of approximately 1.2 million square feet. Construction took place over multiple phases with the goal of creating a building that would eventually stand more than 30 stories. The project achieved LEED® Silver Rating. Key features include dual skin facade on the south facade with integrated intake and exhaust controlled by the BMS. The facade has a 26” deep cavity with an integrated catwalk system, and the single facade has vertical glass exterior fins that are 18” in depth.
