The Fort McMurray Airport opened in 2014 and showcases a beautiful, 3-story timber design that includes passive solar orientation, super-insulated building envelope assemblies, in-floor radiant heating, displacement ventilation, and sophisticated heat recovery systems. All materials used are low-emitting materials for a healthy interior environment. The timber design promotes the benefits of renewable-based wood solutions such as reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, reduced carbon footprint, superior thermal performance, and reductions in energy use. The airport was awarded the Governor General’s Medal for architecture in 2018.
