The Calgary International Airport (YYC), opened in the fall of 2017 after 15 years of planning and five years of construction. The project cost $2 billion and the design not only features the aesthetic beauty of Alberta’s environment, but it was designed with the environment in mind through sustainable practices. YYC’s annual energy consumption has been reduced by 95% and annual greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by 62% through the use of geo-thermal radiant floor heating/cooling. Other sustainable features include high-performance double wall façades with active louvres to trap heat while maintaining views, motorized horizontal blinds and operable windows integrated with solar tracking sensors, customized sunshade solutions with internal and external blinds, and a customized four-sided, triple-glazed solution for optimized insulating values.
