Cairns’ Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex
The CFHBRC is a 4-storey facility that opened in 2012 and introduced new laboratories, research facilities, and office space. The complex achieved LEED® Silver accreditation with green design features that included construction waste diversion, a building-wide recycling system, and locally-specified building materials chosen for low VOC, low embodied energy, and recyclability. Fritted and sandblasted glass curtain wall elements articulate the different faces of the building, while an aluminum ‘honeycomb’ screen that wraps the south and west facades further mitigates passive solar gain. Our team worked in a design assist capacity on this project, and provided a custom screen complete with catwalk, motorized parallel operating windows, and a custom silkscreen pattern optimized for design intent.
