Northwestern University Ryan Fieldhouse & Walter Athletics Center

Location: Chicago, IL
Year Completed: 2017
Client: Northwestern University
Construction Manager: Walsh / Barton Malow
Architects: Perkins + Will

The 419,000 sq. ft. Ryan Fieldhouse and Walter Athletics Center includes a full-size NCAA football field, two sports performance facilities, three basketball courts, locker rooms, and offices for the university athletic department. Design features include a horizontal glass façade, a seawall that stretches across the beach along Lake Michigan, and a cantilevered second floor that extends over the seawall for a view of the Chicago skyline. EFI used extremely large unitized curtain walls with internal structural steel to achieve enormous spans. The project also called for custom metal shading louvres, designed to meet architectural intent and provide the tenant with shading requirements.
